BDSL Gameday – Yemen Elite vs Buffalo Celtic

Today’s match pits 2 teams with 2 different styles of play.  Buffalo Celtic plays an aggressive physical style of soccer while Yemen plays a high tempo passing game.  Buffalo Celtic have had a questionable season after being promoted from the 1st division.  The other 2 teams that were promoted from the 1st division (Queenston and Rush FC) have seen surprising success in the championship division.  Buffalo Celtic are hovering in 6th place which is a playoff spot but they have to maintain wins all the way through to season to secure that spot.  They started the season strong winning against FC Buffalo and Roos, then dropping a surprising game against the last place NS Alliance.  They came close to beating the Sharpshooters and losing by 1 goal, then getting crushed by Rush FC.  They have shown inconsistency throughout the season and have not really become a threat to many teams.  Not sure if it is because of injuries or attendance, but based on last year they finish strong and in a commanding 3rd place.  With the 4th July just passing and many people out of town, will this effect their attendance. We just don’t know.

Yemen Elite is coming off an emotional and punishing win at Fort Niagara, crowds could have been watching us battle instead of the French and Indian re-enactment. Yemen Elite played with an immense heart during that game.  Yemen Elite started with 6 and a goalie on the field and kept Queenston at bay for a few mins until a couple of more Elite players showed up and brang it up to 9.  They kept Queenston scoreless for the first half with amazing saves by Semir Kadric and an unbelieveable goal line header save by Ayman Elsayegh.  By the end of the half Yemen was able to get 11 on the field but that’s it.  Second half was a true brutish game that was  just a hack fest, we saw so many place kicks that second half than we have seen in many games.  Yemen was able to strike first by the foot of Ali Adil who took on 4 Queenston players at break neck speeds to place a slider in the back of the net.  Yemen was able to add one more the to score with a PK by James Ugorji. After that, the tensions ran high from the players and the fans.  The last 15 mins was just an atrocious display of disorder. The ref missed calls, let plays go on and just made the situation worse. In the end, Elite lost one of their main guys on defense Gil Sai to a fractured eye socket that may end his season. As a result Queenston was awarded a PK, which was initially save by Semir, but the rebound was tapped in easily while the defense was sleeping.  Yemen endured the last 10 minutes with a man down as Queenston came close a few times to tie it.

Today contest will be a display of Size versus Speed. Buffalo Celtic needs this win to stay in the hunt and Yemen will have to play with heart and skill to overcome the season injuries and suspensions.  Its been a long time since Elite played at home. They look forward to treating its loyal fans to a win.

By the way, Double header today.  Elite at 4pm, United at 6PM.
